FK Lowry have successfully undertaken the design and installation of 86 No. Bearing Piles for a new Student Accommodation Scheme for a New Client in Glasgow. FK Lowry installed CFA Bearing Piles for Stirling Based, Ogilvie Construction on their New City Road Project in the North of the City. 600mm diameter CFA Bearing Piles were installed using one of FK Lowry’s Soilmec SR-75 dual discipline Piling Rigs. The Ground Conditions were described as Made Ground consisting of medium to high strength sandy Clay overlying Glacial Till. This was underlain by Medium Strong to Strong Sandstone Bedrock with UCS values ranging from 27 to 92MpA. Piles were installed to depths ranging from 8m to 10m into Medium Strong Sandstone for axial loads of up to 2000kN with a 200kN Tension requirement also catered for in the Pile Design.
Senior Estimator, Patrick Savage explains, “The New City Road Scheme presented particular challenges in terms of ground conditions and constraints. We had existing infrastructure directly adjacent to the Site in the form of the SPT Glasgow Metro Tunnels. These tunnels were located just 6m away from the nearest pile position. We had to satisfy the Client that the CFA Technique created negligible vibration and the risk of damage to the Infrastructure Asset was low. We also utilised one of our high torque rigs to ensure that we created a rock socket in the underlying Sandstone to satisfy axial and tension load criteria. We were delighted with the successful delivery of the scheme and look forward to developing our relationship with the new Client”.
